Wherever it sits – concert hall or living room – we will make the piano sound its best. But her greatest joy is her doggie friend, Oscar, the inspiration for her logo design and business name. For non-musical outlets, she takes part in Krav Maga, rock climbing, and the occasional running event. Then, in 2016, she began attending the North Bennet Street School for Piano Technology. After graduating, Tessa moved to Boston and apprenticed with a technician who showed her the basics of piano repair and regulation. During her senior year of college, she shadowed a technician in New Orleans, watching him tune in bars and historic sites like Preservation Hall, where he let Tessa turn her first tuning pin. She was first exposed to piano work while watching her parents' technician tune their piano. Tessa received a BA in Music from Tulane University in 2015. Her childhood piano was a Baldwin Acrosonic spinet, so spinets will always have a special place in her heart. She grew up all over the Northeast, but she spent most of her formative years in central Maine. Wether it be a customer's home, a music venue, a retail store, or his restoration shop, Leal gives the same presence and precision to each instrument he encounters.Tessa Cutler-Wood is a Registered Piano Technician and the owner of Underdog Pianos. With over 20 years of experience, Leal Sylvester has become one of the most sought after piano technicians and piano technology educators in the Pacific Northwest. Leal is now back tuning and servicing pianos all over the Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR areas where he continues to live up to his reputation of a master tuner and technician. A lifelong educator and mentor, it seemed only natural that he found himself back in an educational setting for the next few years, up until the non-profit school closed its doors in 2017, after almost seventy years of teaching blind and visually impaired students to tune and repair pianos. Leal then spent four years in Dallas, TX at Metroplex Pianos tuning and rebuilding pianos before being asked to come back to the School of Piano Technology for the Blind in 2015 to be their head instructor. With a focus on concert grand regulation and fine tuning, he became the technician of choice for many world renowned pianists and performers including the likes of Stevie Wonder. In the years that followed, his proficiency with tuning and repairing pianos became well known amongst musicians, teachers, technicians, retail stores and music schools all over the Pacific Northwest. For five years he tuned and serviced pianos at Classic Pianos in Portland, OR while also maintaining pianos for many colleges and universities including Clark College and Lewis and Clark College. After graduating in 1997 from the School of Piano Technology for the Blind in Vancouver, WA, Leal served as an instructor and field technician at the school for nine more years before starting his own tuning and repair business.
